Gustav Adolf’s church dates back to the 12th century. It was originally built in Fiskebäck on the shores of Lake Vättern, approximately 15 km south of its current location. According to tradition, a noblewoman who got into distress on Lake Vättern is said to have promised to build a church on the shore of the lake, where she “was saved”. However, the original church burned down in 1623, after which a new one was built on the same site. Over time, growing discontent over the church’s location among residents in the northern part of the parish, where there was no church, led to the lakeside church being moved to its current location in 1780. It was also at the time of this move that the congregation acquired its name, after the then Crown Prince, Gustav Adolf.
